Once you've found something you like, we can talk you through costs and how the licensing process works. Music copyright can be a minefield so here's a quick guide to help you understand it.
There are two underlying copyrights within a piece of recorded music - the publishing rights and the recording (or master) rights. The publishing rights are the rights to the "song" - the words, the melody, the lyrics etc. Then there are the recording rights - often controlled by a record company, these are the rights to the actual master recording of the song.
Let's use the song "Summertime" by George and Ira Gershwin as an example. Warner/Chappell control the publishing rights to this song. Suppose I wanted to use the Miles Davis recording of "Summertime". As well as approaching Warner/Chappell, I'd need to clear this with Sony Records who own the master recording. Or maybe I decide to use Brian Wilson's version. His recording is owned by Walt Disney Records so I'd need their permission. Which ever recording I used, I'd always need Warner/Chappell's permission.
